Ryan Semegran (b. 2000, Austin, TX) is a Dallas based interdisciplinary performance artist and sculptor. Semegran’s creative practice focuses on the relationship between the body, identity, and the spiritual through immersive live performances, photography, found object sculpture, and video installations. Pulling from the mythos and folklore of their ethnic background, Semegran uses their body as a medium for personal storytelling and confession. Their work has been featured in institutions and galleries such as Satellite Gallery NYC, Dallas Contemporary, Arts Fort Worth, and the Oak Cliff Cultural Center. Semegran’s Senior BFA exhibition, Run of the Mill, focused on the betrayal and the power imbalance of being in an interracial, interfaith relationship in its demise. Their practice is shaped by their experiences as a Queer, Person of Color living in so-called Texas.
Semegran is a recent recipient of the Arch and Anne Giles Kimbrough Fund through the Dallas Museum of Art. Using the funds, Semegran intends to broaden the scope of performance art on a local level. Making performance art more accessible to the DFW area by putting on DIY exhibitions and organizing workshops that promote more experimental work.
